Backup of the Industrial Edge Management

Joined: 8/29/2022 Last visit: 11/3/2023 Posts: 23 Rating: (0)	You can create a backup of the Industrial Edge Management (IEM) by taking a snapshot of the VMware Workstation Pro/ESXi Server: Hint: To avoid errors, take snapshots only when the VM is powered off via user interface. Select the virtual machine (VM) which runs the IEM. Click "VM"/"Actions" and click the "Snapshot > Take Snapshot" command. In the "Name" input field, enter a unique snapshot name. In the "Description" input field, enter a snapshot description. Click "Take Snapshot". The snapshot is saved. Correspondingly, you can restore the IEM from a previously saved backup: Select the virtual machine (VM) which runs the IEM. Click "VM"/"Actions" and click the "Snapshot > Revert to Snapshot/Manage Snapshots" command to restore the latest taken snapshot or select a specific snapshot. To restore the selected snapshot, click "Yes". The VM is restored. Notice: The procedure described in this post refers to the time of writing of this post (August 2023). HummelN Advanced Member Joined: 4/21/2015 Last visit: 10/29/2024 Posts: 33 Rating: (12)	I would like to add that a snapshot should only be a intermediate backup (e.g. in case of Updating the IEM), but should never be a long term backup. To quote the VMWare documentation: Snapshots should not be considered as a backup for any virtual disks associated with the VMs. Running a virtual machine on a snapshot for extended periods of time can cause instability and data loss. For more information, see Best practices for using snapshots in the vSphere environment Snapshots can be used for development and testing purposes. It can be considered as a quick failsafe to be able to rollback before a patch performing tests on certain applications residing on VM. For making a long term backup, better make a clone of your VM.
