S7-1500 why having memory

The S7-1500 PLCs use the SIMATIC memory card as load memory, which contains code blocks, data blocks, technology objects and the hardware configuration. Since the CPUs have no other way to store this data, the SIMATIC memory card is mandatory. This is slightly different from the S7-1200 PLCs, which have a small internal load memory.

Hi,

in addition to the project, the SMC can hold also other data.

• If DataLogging was used, the datalog files are also stored on the SMC additionally.
• Same thing with Traces.The SMC can also be used as firmware update card.
• You can also add data blocks with the addition to save only in the load memory. These data blocks are not used within the program cycle, but can hold data in combination with instructions "READ_DBL / WRIT_DBL".
• You can also store/create user files on SMC, for example text/csv files and use them with "FileReadC / FileWriteC".
• You can also store user user files like PDF/manuals e.g. in the specific UserFiles folder
• The SMC can be used to load/transfer the program directly, without online connection the the cpu
