S7-1200 with encoder for speed

MadsDK Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	Hi I have an S7-1200 with CPU 1214C and a Omron encoder E6C2-CWZ5B with phase A and B. Software is TIA V11, STEP 7 basic. I want to get a direction and speed from the encoder using the HSC on the PLC but cant find this function in the TIA software. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance Mads

Posts: 215 Rating: (6)	Hello MadsDK, please look up the s7-1200-manual http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/de/36932465 for "HSC" Also look up the help of TIA portalfor the expression"HSC". You will also get some information regarding configuration. For programming: while programming a block you will see at the right collumn the chapter "technology". Click on "Counting" and the function "CRTL_HSC" shows up. maybe you will find some similar postings in this forum like this: /tf/WW/en/Posts/89664 Did this get you closer solving the problem? Regards

William_B Posts: 5225 Rating: (1196)	Mads.. The value ready from ID1000 (as per example) will give a count of pulses measured over the period you specified in the hardware setup. Take care - if you have selected [x4], the effective count will be four times bigger. So example - using a 500 pulse per revolution encoder produces a 2000 counts for each revolution. From this you should make your own calculation routine to give you the engineering units you need. For this you need to know how many mm (inches) is represented by how many counts. Use the measurement and relate it to the measuring period selected in the hardware setup (see previous example). -- so it is your turn to go do some maths. PS: make sure the rotation speed of the encoder does not produce a higher frequency of pulses than what your PLC can handle. Maybe you will see you do not want the [x4] multiplier. Hope it helps. w

Thanks again [smile] Mads, the count is written in the double word sized input ID1000. That includes IB1000 (most significant byte), IB1001, IB1002 and IB1003 (least significant byte). Declare a symbol for ID1000 (input double word) and you can use it as is. Granted the double word will be able to display a mind blowing big number which you do not need. In all possibility you can read the value in IW1002 or maybe even IB1003. To keep things simple for yourself keep with reading ID1000.
