 Hello,

To Answer First Question:

Fiber Optic Cable is used in communication between two remote sites.
You can use FO cables based on Ethernet or Profibus protocol. And other protocols as well.

For instances, the if you would like to make a connection between two sites with long distance (measured in kilo meters), then the Fiber optic is the solution.

You should convert the copper netork to optical at both ends.

For Profibus, OLM (Optical Link Module) is needed. 
For Profinet, You can select a SCALANCE switch or Media Converter with taking into consideration the type of selected cable (IS it Single mod or Multi-Mode)

Selection between Single mode and Multi mode cable should be based on the distance. For long distance, Single mode should be used.

Some other accessories should taken into cosiderations like batch cords, batch panels, connectors, couplers, ...etc Type of connectors and couplers could be seen in previous post published by khaled_ezzat here in this thread.

To Answer Second Question:

To fix Optical Fiber Cable terminal, we should first identify where's the problem.

If you have good network drawing and could identify the faulty link, there are devices can be used to check FO segment and even identify where's the fault or cable cut (if any).

1. Prepare Necessary Tools & Supplies.
2. Identify Fiber Optic Wire & damaged section.
3. Use the Diagonal Cutters to Cut the Cable.
4. Size Up the Length of Wire you need to Strip.
5. Strip the Cable to the Previously Measured Length.
6. Feed the Fiber Optic Terminal onto the Cable you Stripped.
7. Place the Cable and Uncrimped End Into the Crimp Tool.
8. Insert the Terminalized Ends into the One Way In-Line Splice/Connector
9. Perform a “Tug Test” by Pulling on Both Sides.
