Profibus-DP, it depends on the baud rate

• 9.6kb/s to 93.75kb/s -> 1200m
• 187.5kb/s ->1000m
• 500kb/s -> 400m
• 1.5Mb/s -> 200m
• 3Mb/s to 12Mb/s - 100m

Profinet

• 100Meters for Electrical (Cat5/Cat6 cable)

FiberOptic

Hi,

PROFIBUS:

1. Length is inversely proportional to baud rate. As you see from the other answers.

2. Also It depends upon the quality of cables you purchase.

3. Sometimes i noticed short cables between nodes making problem due to capacitance, lead to data loss. so you need to follow 1m rule (minimum) between nodes to achieve the mentioned length vs speed.

PROFINET:

Theoretically yes it can go upto 100m, you need to make sure no loss due to magnetic fields from electrical wires while laying ( Use of conduit will be better to achieve this mentioned length).

FIBREOPTIC: There is single core and multi core cable. Single core can take data longer than a multi core cable without loss. Selection will vary with your application of use.

Profibus:

It depends also on the signal quality of the whole bus segment. IF you have Strong electircal fields of Power Cables for Drives for example (also only for a short distance) then this could cause a lower Signal Quality. Or if you have stubs in the Bus segment then it reduces the Signal quality and usable distance of the Bus cable dramaticaly.

The best to have a good overview to the Signal Quality on the Profibus is to use a Profibus Tester. Here  you can see where are error sources and how good is the Quality of the Signal.
