I am a neophyte in this kind of topics and I have to say that it is not very easy to understand some concepts.

I would like to get more information about profibus/profinet. Can we say that profibus is an alternative to the SECS/GEM protocole ?

Moreover is profibus a software or hardware?

Can Profinet be used as a MES or it is 2 different things ?

And to finish how do you defined the best protocole/interface that you shoul use for complex processes in photovoltaic industry ?

I don´t know much about SECS/GEM, so I try to help just with my knowledge from Wikipedia about it. I think it is similar to Profibus/Profinet.

PROFIBUS (Process Field Bus) is a standard for fieldbus communication in automation technology and was first promoted in 1989 by BMBF (German department of education and research) and then used by Siemens.

PROFINET (Process Field Net) is a standard for Industrial Ethernet based on Industrial Ethernet according to IEEE 802.xx. 

quick and dirty:

Profibus are doing almost the same on different ways. Profibus is on based RS485, Profinet on Industrial Ethernet.

 I don´t think it is the same. Then it will be called Profibus 

Profibus is a Bus-System(shielded 2-Wire) with a specified protocoll that is used in automation for decentral periphery(DP). 

Profinet is almost the same, with Ethernet Topplogy.

The internet doesn´t tell much about SECS/GEM. I guess it is similar, but not the same. 

If you can describe was SECS/GEM does, we can tell you where it is common and where are the differents.

Actually I am totally lost because I don´t have the basics.

I am working on a complex industrial process and we don´t know yet if we are going to use SECS/GEM protocol or if Profibus could be an alternative. We already know that SECS/GEM works but I am looking for some alternative.

maybe better will be post info about your devices which require that communication system, or another reason for your interest to that.

Update: looking to internet, now probably understand, in my opinion only putting chaos to existing systems, not standard. If I good understand now existing better standarad systems like OPC, so in my opinion not important sry, sry but my opinion. If it's your bussines now, yes can be implemented via some way, but in future (as isn't still standard in my opinion) big problem. But give pls info.
