working on getting some backups made

• made archives of PLC,NC,Drives...
• shut down machine
• removed sata HDD from PCU (seagate 160gb hard drive, but probably a replacement)

---- Cloning setup ----

PC running clonezilla from a USB drive

plug in HDD from DMU

plug in new SSD 128gb

boot straight to clonezilla

device -> device, no file system repair, just straight clone

• install sata SSD in PCU
• boot machine

at this point things get a little strange but nothing too crazy, a couple extra screen flickers, but everything seems to boot to the machine OS environment without issues. The machine readys and everything functions.

• shut down machine from the "exit" soft key menu, then confirming, same as usual... 

this is where things get really strange

the machine OS environment quits and then "starting VNC viewer" then a new menu appears. (see attachment)

from here I have to just hard power down the machine to get anywhere.

when booting up the second time, the resolution is wrong and things seem generally screwed up. (i can only attach one thing in the first post can post more in the next)

I've done multiple clones to see what's going on and it always follows the same process. Things will be fine on the first boot but shutting down and trying to boot again from the same drive will always screw things up.

I haven't tried putting the HDD back because it's the only "virgin" copy of the file system I have. I'm afraid what's happening with the SSDs is going to happen with the HDD too.

I've used clonezilla a lot and never had an issue, there really aren't many options to screw up when it comes to that anyways. It's just a simple drive to drive exact clone.

What am I missing? Are there BIOS settings in the PCU or TCU that reset on the drive swap?

Sinumerik systems equit with PCU50 /IPC427E will have PCU Base software loaded as part of the commissioning phase. This contains onboard backup utilities which means you do not need to remove the hard drive a clone via a caddy.

For PCU 50s this on-board backup and restore utility was Norton Ghost. This is the only official backup and restore method supported by Siemens

I appreciate the reply, but it doesn't really help. Hard drives fail all the time. There is nothing that should stop swapping in a new drive because that would be required in the event of a failure, and I've done this other other PCUs before without issues. This DMU is unlikely to be running the original hard drive anyways. Cloning the drive and keeping it disconnected (after doing an archive of the data) is the only real way to truly backup the machine.

What is the "official" method of dealing with an outright hard drive failure (aka no recoverable data from the drive)?

What is the IPC427E?

Going to take another shot at this today... cloning the 160GB HDD to a nearly identical model 160GB HDD.

Cloning/copying/mirroring... I don't know the direct translation

160GB seagate drive in the machine (original?? maybe not, machine is old, but we'll call it that)

removed that drive

cloned to new (used from ebay) 160GB seagate

installed new drive

all works exactly like the "original" drive
