Hello, I am not a CNC guy, so my explanations may not be accurate but I will try my best. One of our CNC machines (AUTOMAT-AT 830E-HD), shows same alarm 20004 but for Z axis. NCU type: SINUMERIK 840D(6FC5357-0BB15-0AA0) Alarm: 20004 Channel 1 axis Z1 reference mark missing Encoder type: Incremental, because MD30240=1 From the manual I found some remedy but its not clear Remedy - "Determine the distance between 2 odd reference point markers (reference point marker interval). This value(which is 20.00 mm on Heidenhain scales) must be entered in the machine data 34060 REFP_MAX_MARKER_DIST. Check the reference point track of the scale including the electronics for the evaluation." When I check on the machine I found MD34060- REFP_MAX_MARKER_DIST(0) as 20mm and MD34060- REFP_MAX_MARKER_DIST(1) as 80mm. Do I need to consider MD34060-REFP_MAX_MARKER_DIST(1) or not?. Also I try to follow your steps, but my encoder is incremental type, so please suggest the appropriate parameters. In my machine the parameters you mentioned is as follows, MD30240(0) = 1 (Understood that its incremental type.) MD30200 = 2 (This means do I have 2 encoders) MD34210(0) = 0 Kindly suggest how to troubleshoot this. Note: I have same another working machine and already tried by swapping the Hard disk but still the same error.

Can you provide model of linear scale? Alarm 20004 says that 2 reference marks were not found within the defined searching distance (MD 34060 [1] in your case ),so it seems that readhead can't see reference marks on ref track, because if it was some kind of false ref signals due to continuations on glass it should be alarm 20003 (Measuring system error). The problem can be with readhead, also try to check wiring. The best way to find local OEM representative for diagnostic of your linear scale.
