Yes, it is really a simple process. You do not need to format the computer or take any additional action.

I recommend you to check that your PC meets the HW and SW requirements of WInCC V8.1. You can check this starting from page 20 of the manual: Wincc 8.1 Manual

Also, you would need to purchase the corresponding license. For example, you can get an Upgrade license: Sales and delivery release SIMATIC WinCC V8.1 incl. options

I´m not sure if you can say its is possible without issues...

WinCC V8.0 uses SQL Server 2019 and WinCC V8.1 uses SQL Server 2022.

So you will have to uninstall also the SQL Server before installing the new WinCC Version.

Also SQL Server often dives into OS deep and in some cases there could be a rest of installation or configuratino in registry that could cause also issues with other SQL versions.

If you want to get sure 100% to have a spable new winCC system then I would always use a fresh OS installation for WinCC.

but of course it could also went OK and everything works. I had both already...
