C# and Java are essentially the same language, so pick a programming platform and use the appropriate language (Visual Studio... C#, or Visual Studio Code and all those languages will work).

For automation, it depends on the type of automation.  I.T. based automation is likely to employ python.  Control engineering is likely to use JS for HMI GUI and web based visualization.

C# is an option if you want to use the high end S7-1500 based open controller that can run native .NET code as an integral part of the control logic.

Based on all that, my recommendation is C#, keeping in mind if you use VS Code, you can port much of the code directly into java.  There's probably a translation tool that converts the minor bits that are different automatically.
