I am also facing the same problem. i am using the V20 siemens vfd. the vfd is not tripping at overcurrent.  

I set the parameters  P640 at motor full load(100%) and P 290 =1. I tried P640 with 50%. But the motor is not tripping at all. it is giving alarm of A501. but not tripping.

can anyone help me for this?

P290 is a reaction to an overload of the inverter, not the motor

it could be done using status word 2 (r53) bit 3, which indicates that actual current exceeded value in p2170. You can set this bit as source for External fault in p2106.

So you can set current limit in p2170 (as a percentage of rated motor current) and with p2106 = r53.3 will be indicated as fault F85 its exceeding.
