Hello All,

I am trying to write to a file on the local drive, using the example in the manuals it seems to run without any error but when I look at the local drive I cannot find the file.  I also tried creating the file and then using EXTOPEN() to open and write to that file.  Once again the program executes without error but when I open the file I created there is no data in it.  I am not sure what I am doing wrong, as I have tried other ways of of setting the OUTPUT string such as adding a : after local drive but doing so does result in an error.  Here is my program:

Hopefully someone has had some success and can tell me where I am going wrong.  This is being done on a Siemens 840D sl control.

Bumping this as I have the same question having tested as above with the same results on a 840D Sl Operate (also has to be applicable to HMI Advanced).

I want to write a log file but to LOCAL DRIVE not NC memory due to large storage capacity difference.

Specifying the path as:

/_N_MPF_DIR/...

/_N_SPF_DIR/...

/_N_CUS_DIR/...

etc all work but are not located on High capacity storage drive (the written file stays loaded in NC memory, and I do not wish, if possible, to fill it up and impact production)

Using manuals:

For Powerline, advanced programming 6FC5298-7AB10-0BP0 for base WRITE() funciton syntax

For Solution Line, 840D SL 828D Job Planning 6FC5398-2BP20-1BA0 

"LOCAL_DRIVE:" is taken from extcall syntax on the assumption:hope that the filepath call structure is the same, but something is missing.

The WRITE function section does not specify specifically how to differentiate between NC memory or LOCAL DRIVE, and i couldn't find anywhere else how this file path structure is defined in Siemens lingo.

As a further constraint, I really want to use the same macro for Powerline and Solution Line, so if I don't have to use EXTWRITE instead that would be a major plus.

Appreciate your link, but at this stage I am hoping to stick to the Siemens file path structure so it is as mentioned above, system agnostic.

Nice to discover that 840D SL runs on linux though (we've been crippled by a cyber attack for 6months +)!

Hi. Actually it is really possible to write to Local_drive.

One of our machines is Sinumerik 840D sl on Linux and this function works perfectly, but few other machines is on Win7 and celos shell - i just cant get it to write to Local_drive. Even if i grant full access to directory i need, still i got only no error(code 0) on EXTOPEN and WRITE and still no file created. Thought that it couldnt write because we had "NC Extend" on our CNC, not "LOCAL_DRIVE".

Has someone managed to write outside the NC memory using these functions (write, extopen, extclose) ?
