With SIMOTION V4.2 SP1 there is a very useful new function available.

Fields with dynamic length
§ In functions and function block, fields with dynamic length can be declared, too.
§ It is not necessary that the size of the array is defined at the time of transformation.
§ Index limits are not declared – only as transition parameters in functions or function blocks. The detection of the index limits and the number of elements during the run time is realized via the system functions _firstIndexOf, _lastIndexOf and _lengthIndexOf
§ They are important for the programming of generic program modules and libraries.

i := _firstIndexOf(flexArray);
