Hi vadrad, you are right in the version prior to PCS7 V9.0 there was some limitations. But with the version V9.0 there was a lot of changes according to PROFINET in PCS 7 and now I would say PROFINET is the state of the art communication bus for PCS 7. I have not heard of any bugs or strange phenomena occurring with PROFINET. Also the highest available redundancy at the PLCs, bus, and IMs is like or better then PROFIBUS, for example you don't have to reserved bytes at the PROFIBUS for adding devices. You can find a lot of information about PROFINET in PCS 7 like Guidelines and Blueprints, Topology or the overview of PROFINET devices in SIMATIC PCS 7 it the application example PROFINET in Process Automation with SIMATIC PCS 7. To sum up, in my opinion PROFIBUS is a good options but I would use PROFINET instead of PROFIBUS. In high availability there is no big advantage for PROFINET or PROFIBUS, but with PROFINET you get all the new feature, like flexible topology, higher speed, easier trouble shouting with the (free) Siemens tool PRONETA, and so on.
