Information about the IOT2050:

• Overview about FS states of IOT2050: The functional state (FS) indicates in which status the device is delivered. This article also gives you an overview of what OS-versions are required on your device
• Guide: Firmware Update to latest Version (Note: Update your device to at least V1.4.x to fix the reboot issue. We recommend updating your devices.)

Operating System Options:

For the IOT2050 we are offering two supported OS options: Example Image and SIMATIC Industrial OS (IndOS). IOT2050 Advanced versions are delivered with a pre-installed version of IndOS on the eMMC. What OS is suitable for you?

• The SIMATIC Industrial OS (IndOS) is a Debian-based Linux system and is optimized for industrial applications with features like hardened security. It's recommended for production environments where stability and security are critical. The OS does not include a GUI by default. Please follow our guide on How to setup Industrial OS on the IOT2050 Advanced.
• The IOT2050 Example Image is a Debian-based Linux system and provides additional flexibility for development purposes - including tools like SDKs for cross-compilation and support for various programming languages. It is ideal for testing, prototyping and scenarios requiring custom configurations not available in IndOS. Please follow our GitHub-guide Setting-Up & Working with Example Image.

How to connect to your IOT2050?

• Display Port cable and Keyboard: The easiest way is to connect your IOT2050 with a Display Port cable to a monitor and to control it via a keyboard (Important: Passive signal adapters like passive DP-to-HDMI-adapters are not supported! We recommend using default DP cables).
• Serial Connection via UART Cable: The serial connection must be configured with the correct COM-port, Speed 115200 and a suitable UART cable (Recommended: FTDI TTL-232R-3V3 USB to UART). The Serial connection also allows you to access the uboot-shell
• Ethernet connection: When using the IOT2050 Example Image you can directly connect to the X1P1 port of the IOT2050 (pre-configured to IP 192.168.200.1 - for older versions <V1.1.1 it is pre-configured on X1P2). Please make sure your Engineering Station is in the same subnet as the IOT2050 (Important: IndOS has no IP address configured by default - please choose another option for first commissioning). You cannot access the uboot shell with the ethernet-connection.

• NodeRed Data Collector: Example how to read data from a S7-1500 with the IOT2050 via S7, Modbus TCP and OPC UA and store the data in a local database on the IOT2050 using node-red
• NodeRed OPCUA Server: The application describes how data can be stored, structured and read out on a local OPC UA server built with Node-Red. The data used are read out from an S7 PLC using different protocols.
• Serial Modbus RTU: This application shows two ways to exchange data via a serial port between PC (Windows/Linux) and the IOT2050. In the first example a pure serial transmission is used, while in the second example the communication protocol Modbus RTU is used additionally.
• LoRa-Gateway mPCIe: Instructions for using the IOT2050 as a LoRa WAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) gateway with The Things Network as the network server. LoRa WAN Concentrator is realized with an mPCIe-card.
• IOT2050SM-Energy-Data-Management: This application describes how to collect and manage energy data on an IOT2050SM using a compatible Energy Meter 1238. The performance data will be collected, pre-processed and forwarded to a SCADA system using MQTT.

Status LED on IOT2050 (using the Example Image):

The IOT2050 variants have four different Status LEDs: PWR, STAT, USER1 & USER2

• PWR (Power) LED:
  • Green: Indicates that the IOT is in operation.
• STAT (Status) LED:
  • Green: System is starting up.
  • Green blinking: The operating system is running.
  • Red: System startup failed or no valid operating system is detected.
  • Red blinking: The operating system crashed.
• USER1 and USER2 LED: These are user-programmable LEDs and can be set to indicate different statuses (Red, Green, Orange) or functions as defined by the user.

A running operating system contains a green PWR-LED and a green-blinking STAT-LED.
