pc unable to ping iot2050

rail8 Joined: 5/21/2025 Last visit: 10/20/2025 Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	hi all hope some can help im using a rj45 to usb adaptor and asking if this could be the problem it will not ping the iot2050? my laptop does not have rj45 port. is there a beter way to link the iot2050 to the laptop? thanks in advance.

udae Joined: 3/12/2024 Last visit: 10/31/2025 Posts: 215 Rating: (7)	Hello rail8, Using an RJ45 to USB adapter should theoretically allow you to connect the SIMATIC IOT2050 to your laptop - but: there might be compatibility or driver issues with the adapter, which could prevent successful communication. So please check the following steps: verify adapter compatibility (drivers installed correctly) check your network configuration for the adapter and on both your laptop and IOT2050 (same subnet etc.) We are also using these kind of adapters with IOT2050 and it they work fine. This kind of issue is mostly related to these network configuration or driver issues. We are not using specifc rj45 cross over cable for this purpose: Laptop → RJ45 Adapter → Ethernt cable → IOT2050 ethernet port BR

I have tried the subnet changes. no luck yet to even be able to ping the unit after many months of trying with so much frustration. Still trying to see the guy at Siemens but keep finding one of us is on leave. Im using windows 11 and feel that could be part of the problem but i did try a very old pc too with no luck. will it ping the unit if the image on the usb stick is not correct?? looking for any ideas as this should not be this hard. it is not user friendly. please help….

udae Joined: 3/12/2024 Last visit: 10/31/2025 Posts: 215 Rating: (7)	Hello rail8, have you checked if your usb adapters need additional drivers to run on Linux? This would be my first suggestion. Also a very common mistake is that you don't have correct network adapter settings in your host machine. You are only able to ping the iot2050 if you are in the same subnet! The Example Image is pre-configured with the static ip address 192.168.200.1 on X1 → ping is available after the bootup → as you might have done some changes this could be changed now. will it ping the unit if the image on the usb stick is not correct?? what usb stick ar you talking about? I assume you are using an Example Image on sd card? If you can see a successful bootup via UART there might be no issue with the image. Are you using Example Image or IndOS? What IOT2050 device are you using? What Image is installed? What adapters have you tried? Please share more information it's quite difficult to support with your shared information. BR

rail8 Joined: 5/21/2025 Last visit: 10/20/2025 Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi BR Thanks for the reply The usb is what has the example image loaded onto it but I have also now put the image onto a SD card but now can not login using the uart cable option. Have have now tried 4 different cable option to try to communicate with the unit and when making the subnet the same it just seems to only ping the rj45 to usb adaptor and not the iot2050. All the lights are frasging and green but can not ping so putty can not login either. I have done lots of searching on the adaptors I'm using and they do not need drivers. The image I'm using is the advised image from siemens site so should work. I'm have been trying to catch up with the local rep here but we have not been able to catch up yet he is very busy. Not very impressed with the unit at this point and starting to look for other options. Hope you can suggest what I'm missing as very hard to get help.. Thanks JR

Maybe it is booting from emmc (IOT2050 Advanced) and not from the sd card with your Example Image. Please follow every step of our IOT2050-Setting-Up-Example and have a specific look in the section Change boot order in in u-boot shell via UART connection. `but now can not login using the uart cable option.` Is there an output on your serial connection via uart - if yes please share the output. I have the following setup: Host laptop - Delock usb to ethernet adapter - IOT2050 eno1 port I have no issues with this connection. I configured the adapter on the host with ip 192.168.0.100 and subnet 255.255.255.0. Please check your boot order and verify that you are booting from the fresh example image. BR
