I’ve seen this kind of problem before with Siemens robots and S7-1500  PLCs. In many cases, it’s related to the PROFINET communication rather than the robot program. The message “Communication timeout: robot not responding” usually means that the IO connection between the PLC and the robot controller is lost for a short time, and the system stops because of a timeout.

First, check the network and cables: try changing the PROFINET cable for a new one, and if possible, connect the robot directly to the PLC to rule out problems with the switch. You can also check the diagnostic buffer in TIA Portal to see if there are messages like “Device not reachable” or “IO communication failure.” On the robot side, look at the communication log to see if it also shows a lost connection.

Another common cause is that the supervision or watchdog time is too short. Try increasing the timeout a bit and see if the problem disappears. It’s also good to check that the robot firmware and the GSDML file used in TIA Portal are compatible.

If the problem still happens, check for possible electrical noise or short power drops that could affect the robot’s network card. In my case, the issue was solved after isolating the connection and updating the firmware.
