Connect laptop to S7 MPI/Profibus Whitout PCMCIA slot

ToTheNextLevel... Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	I bought a new PC without PCMCIA slot. I have this CP5511, but on this new PC there is only this new standard Express card.. Iheard thereis a cable for USB what type is this, and isit possible to connect directly on profibus? And is this the only solution for me then?[:o]

Remember that with STEP 7 5.3 you can also use the Ethernet port of your PC to comunicate with the PLCs.

It is an excellent programming interface that I recommend to my customers. The primary attraction over the CP5511 (now the CP5512) is cost. Other than what was mentioned above about it not working on bus speeds greater than 1.5mb, there is one other thing I noticed. The USB adaptermust have24vdc power from the PLC it is connected to. Therefore it will not work if you connect it to the piggyback connector on the back of a monitoring computer. Not many of my customers would notice this, but I frequently connect my laptop to the PG connector on a CP5613 card on a WinCC computer.

See http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/21226394 It's then also suitable for PPI-communication as well. Regards, kgw

JWdotNET Posts: 10 Rating: (0)	I use a netlink adapter it's a device from helmholz and connects from UTP on the PCto MPI on the PLC it works fabulous and superfast and another thing we managed to do is connect to it via internet! we had the PLC and netlink in the office and connected to it from home No teleservice needed only a router with NAT

Pee Ell Sea Posts: 672 Rating: (57)	HI, I've gone the IBH Link route which is another make of the ethernet adapter. They do run hot no doubt, but the flexibilty of being able to use any network to connect or a very long cheap off the shelf extension cable is an advantage not to be missed. Siemens missed a product enhancement opportunity here as the distance from programmer to plc is almost limitless and it will work with any Siemens plc that has a profibus or mpi interface. Sorry to push a non Siemens product but if you are buying an MPI/Profibus adapter have a serious look at the third party ethernet offerings.
