Software and system protection by trial period - any idea?

For example, I would like to make some time bomb in the PLC software, so that in e.a. February next year, PLC goes to stop. Also, I need easy recovery from the situation, known to me, but not known to customer. I guess many of engineers faced the situation where this solution would be useful, I am looking for good ideas. Maybe there is some system solution that I am not aware of.
