AutoGen_103659 Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	Hello, I have a question, I am a machine tech at a machine shop and through the years we have acquired a lot of machines with 840D's. As our machines are aging it is becoming more apparent that it would be very beneficial for us to learn how to use STEP 7 for diagnostic purposes. Unfortunately, the company I work for does not like to invest a lot of money into training for us so I am looking on my own trying to build myself a "training" unit. So I may be trying to incorporate HMI, PCU, NCU, S7300 and whatever other devices I can lay my hands on. Since I am doing this on my own I am looking to do it as cheaply as possible. I can pick up many of these things on Ebay for a reasonable cost so i may be able to do it for less than $10K. The biggest thing for me is how can I get the software cheap? I know there is a lite version but from what I am seeing that will not have everything I believe I would need. There is software for sale on Ebay that claim has floating licenses and such. What i am wondering is, do you think it's feasible to purchase these cheap versions? I realize that Siemens might discourage doing this but I need to educate myself so I can service this stuff so I would hope that Siemens would actually support this. I just thought I would see what you think? I really don't want to buy one of these from Ebay and find out that I can't use it because of some license issue... I just want to learn STEP 7... Thanks for any input that would help me accomplish my goal...

They will most likley very helpful as you are a potentially future customer. When you have recived your hopefully free copy of step7, install additional software "PLCSIM". Dont bother bying hardware if you just started learnng. The money saved, you can spend on litterature by Hans Berger on simatic programming.

Unless the Siemens rep youcontact has a copy in his desk, the only trial license available now is for Step 7 v5.6. It is an adaptation of Step 7 v5.5 to Win10, but it also works with 64-bit versions of Windows 7. Here is a download link for Step 7 v5.6: Where do you procure the current trial software for STEP 7 V5.6? https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/109747981 Once you have your software (and PLCSim if possible, or some available CPU to test your programs on), I can suggest you look at these tutorials prepared by Siemens for automation students. Use the "Classic" modules for Step 7 v5.6. They present an increasing complexity of programming utilities from the very basic to more advanced modules as you go along, and we can help you out if something makes you struggle along the way.
