annupalani Posts: 26 Rating: (2)	Dear Experts We are using Two Non Siemens (Emersons-Delta V) Profibus master connected to a single RS 485 Repeater Part Number:6ES7 972-0AA01-0XA0 in DP1 and DP2. In above case any special care should be taken. Since we are unable to establish the second segment,if any one of the two segment is connected it is working fine, but not with two segment together. Following are the attempts and observation made by us. Segment 1 & Segment 2 are independent Profibus segments controlled by two independent Non Siemens Profibus Masters. Attempt 1: Connect Segment 1 only. Segment 1 works - all Profibus nodes communicating before and after repeater.DP 1 LED is Steady ON & DP 2 LED is OFF. Attempt 2: Connect Segment 2 only. Segment 2 works - all Profibus nodes communicating before and after repeater.DP 2 LED is Steady ON & DP 1 LED is OFF. Attempt 3: Connect Segment 1 with terminator off. Connect Segment 2 with terminator on. Segment 1 works - all Profibus nodes communicating before and after repeater. Segment 2 Profibus nodes communicate up to repeater. Attempt 4: Connect Segment 1 with terminator off. Connect Segment 2 with terminator off. Only one of the two segments will communicate to nodes beyond the repeater.We have configured same speed in both segment. If Segment 1 is OK then we have DP 1 LED steady ON and the second segment which is not OK has DP 2 LED Flashing fast. If Segment 2 is OK then we have DP 2 LED steady ON and the first segment which is not OK has DP 1 LED Flashing fast. Our Requirement: We need to have two independent segments from two Non Siemens Profibus Masters to be taken in a single Repeater for which we could not able to achieve. Kindly advice on attempt 3 & attempt 4. Thanks&Regards Palani

You have two stand alone profibus lines, each containing a master and it's slave's. You want to connect both profibus lines, why don't you use DP/DP coupler: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/18491063 To exchange data between masters. Best regards, Wizard

Please refer to the attached document for an illustration. Now if this reflects the architecture you are planning, your problem might be that the 2 segments are in reality a single Profibus line, on which there are 2 masters. All addresses must be selected to be unique (masters and all slaves do not share an address, for example master_1 and its slaves use addresses 3 to 30, master_2 and its slave use 40 to 60. With Step 7, you can integrate two programs in a single project, both masters sharing Netpro makes it easier to spot trouble; you can also set the bus parameters to take into account the total length of the 2 segments, plus the presence of repeater(s) in the configuration. I don't know how the 3rd-party Profibus configuratior will handle the presence of 2 masters on the same bus. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier Attachment Repeater_2masters.JPG (827 Downloads)

annupalani Posts: 26 Rating: (2)	Hi Thanks for your info. The architecture is exactly same as you have shown in JPG. We have taken care for Terminating Resistor switch position also(as per reqmt). But still we are facing problem as I had mentioned earlier. Can u plz. suggest/advice any checks/specific procedure to be followed. Thanks&Regards Palani

Since because you use a repeater, the 2 segments are considered to be part of a single bus.I suggest youstart byattributing addresses 1 to 8 to the nodes in segment 1, then addresses 11 to 18 to segment 2 nodes. Now immediately we couldnt able to check since the downloading is not possible to master(Plant is running).This excersise will be done during the shutdown period. Riverting back to our previous address assignment we assumed that (as per Repeater manual/datasheets where it is mentioned Two segments) it can handle Two master's ie Two independant Profibus Loops where we dont need to take care of addresses to be unique in both segments. Now the clarificationrequested is whther two segmenst are not isolated with each other? Thanks&Regards Palani

All addresses must be selected to be unique [/Quote] The 2 segments are electrically isolated by the presence of the repeater. They are not logically isolated. They are part of the same bus. From the Simatic Net Profibus Networks manual: What is an RS-485 Repeater? An RS-485 repeater amplifies data signals on bus cables and links bus segments. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier
