4 core fiberoptic cable

mef3000 Posts: 81 Rating: (1)	we haves7 300:314c-2dp-6ES7 314-6CF02-0AB0 V2.0and cp:CP 342-5 - 6GK7 342-5DA02-0XE0 V5.0 OLMs are G12 and G11 optic cable is glass fiberoptic.We have a line topology. When i checked patch box fiber optic cable has 4 core and on the coming cable its connected to OLM with patch cord and on the going cable it s same.But in every cable only 2 cores are used and other 2 cores are empty with connectors. What i would like to know is that if it s posibble to connect these empty cores with patch cords and changing OLMs at end of the line and making a ring topology this way.Or should i have a new cable to make ring?

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 3/20/2025 Posts: 3042 Rating: (1061)	Hello mef3000 you can definetely build anFO ring by replacing the end of line G11's with G12's and use the existing spare cores in your multicore FO cable to as the "ring return line". You will however notNOT gain all thatmuch by doing so, sinceacut in the Multicore FO cable will in this case lead to a lossof communication (rather than leading to a line structurewith no loss of communication). The only small advantage that you will gain is that loss of an individual OLM (e.g. power failure to it), would now only take out the stations connected to that OLM. My advise, if you need increased availability of your FO network, put in a new FO cable in a physically seperate cable tray to the original one. Last but not least, please pay heed to notes forRing Structures in the OLM manual too should you decide to use an OLMring as you will have to adjust the Profibus timings. I hope this helps

mef3000 Posts: 81 Rating: (1)	fritz, thank you for answering . What i need is that small gain.Because cable cut is a small posibility since cable is laid well.But when i have problems in one station i dont see the rest of line.
