840Di will not start up.

Bill E. Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	We have a 840Di/DiE, PCU50, 1.2 GHZ, MCI Board K, WinNT4.0, Version A with a problem. Upon startup the operator encountered a message on the screen as best as he recalls "WinNT missing File <WinNT\ xxxxx\HAL.dll". He shut the machine down and tried to restart. Now screen stays completely black. We are getting power to the PCU power supply and power out of the power supply. The hard drive seems like it does not spin. Should the hard drive always spin when power is being sent to the mother board? If the hard drive failed, should we still get some activity on the screen upon startup? Thanks, Bill

Thanks, Bill Hello, Looks like windows corruption .....try removing the harddisk in the pcu and replug it back. you can connect the external monitor on the VGA port of PCU50and check screen is coming or not? Check it out and revert back. Regards, Prakash

I have also switched power supplies with a known good one, as well as the memory stick. Still no screen activity. The only activity I can tell that is going on with the mother board is the fan runs. i am suspecting a mother board or video card issue. Is there anything else I can rule out? Thanks, Bill

It may appear if one of the following: file corrupted, file deleted, HDD damaged, incorrect boot order, problems with boot.ini Windows file, etc. You can try the following: 1. check for HDD noise (spinning, ticking) 2. if spinning, check and repair hdd bad sectors. If needed try and do this by connecting HDD to another computer 3. if the problem persists, copy hal.dll file from other widows NT installation and put it on your HDD at the same location (of from a previous HDD backup) 4. check for problem with Windows boot.ini, and booting order in BIOS 5. if your HDD is ticking - HDD reading head is stucked. Try hitting HDD gently to your hand on longitudinal side several times. If that's not working then you may remove HDD cover in a dust-free and possible darken environment and try and move reading head arm by a tool or by hand without damaging turntable. If it works, then as soon as the HDD is spinning and your system is loading (cover back on), make another backup ghost and get another HDD 6. if this is not working, you have to get another HDD It may be some other techniques to solve this, but these are to be checked on a first try.
