Accessing SST Profibus net using PDM software

I need to get to PA level to configure node addresses on 'smart' Nodes which are only configurable via the network. The nodes I wish to configure are Baumer flextop 2231 temp transmitters. The manufacturer of these 'PUKS' says that these can be configured using Simatic PDM software. My main issue is that I cannot get online to the network in the first place. Can anyone tell me what is the correct equipment to use to get online to the network, ( cables, comms cards etc). I have tried an MPI adaptor, but this gets its 24V supply form the PLC and the SST card does not supply 24V through the PLC. I even tried connecting an external 24V supply to the card, but still cannot get comms to the SST card. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Reid;
To connect PDM to a Profibus-DP network (that is how you will access the PA slaves) you will need a Profibus CP in your PC. As stated, you need 24V power for this operation, and the PC Adapter does not provide it by itself.
We install PDM on laptops, and use a CP 5512 PCMCIA/Cardbus interface to configure our PA slaves:

COMMUNICATION PROCESSOR CP 5512 PC CARD (CARDBUS, 32 BITS) FOR CONNECTION OF A PG OR NOTEBOOK TO PROFIBUS OR MPI

If your laptop does not have a Cardbus interface, there is a new CP 5711 USB-Profibus interface, but you will need an external 24V power supply to provide enough power for its operations.

We do not need an extra license for the CP (Softnet for example); the PDM licence (Basic, 128 tags, no integration) supports the link directly. An MPI cable, or Profibus cable + connectors, are of course required to connect the CP interface to the network.

I don't know about the 24VDC but I have found this FAQ which states that the main reason behind incompatibility of PC adapter with PDM is that PC adapter doesn't support acyclic communication on the Profibus. We were not working with Siemens PLCs at the time we developped our working habits with PDM (actually, a SST Profibus master was the first Controllogix processor we used with PA), but the PDM manual did state explicitely that a CP + driver was necessary. As we were working with laptops for commissioning, we setup CP5512s for our physical interfaces to Profibus-DP. Since everything worked as expected, we never had to look back at the reasons why, I guess. The CPs acted as Masters Class 2 when communicating with our PA network, so there was not much interference with the SST master. Good to know there was a reason behind our methods...
