Active Front End?

gmix99 Posts: 1 Rating: (0)	Hi, I'd like to reduce harmonics(THDi), so we consider to use SIEMENS products. Searching your website, I foundtwo products which can reduce harmonics. First is Active Power filter and the other is Active Front End. Anyway, I totally would like to know what is different between Active Power Filter and ActiveFront End?Could you explainmedetaily such as positive factors or drawbacks.. I have only short knowledge about active power filter and active front end... The biggest difference between active power filter and active front end are the type of power source? what i mean Active Power filter support 3phase, but Active front end support DC-Voltage. just that reason? Further more, In your opininon what is the best one to reduce harmonics? Thanks

DenisMor Posts: 344 Rating: (50)	To break it down to basic components a typical multi-axis drive system consists of the following components: Line Filter Line Reactor Rectifier Drives Line filter purpose is to isolate drive system harmonics from the line. Active Power Filter is a line filter with active electronic components controlling harmonics. Clean Line Filter only uses passive components to accomplish the same task. Line Reactor purpose is to provide impedance matching for the rectifier circuitry to operate properly. Rectifier is used to convert incoming AC voltage to DC bus voltage that the drives use to control motors. There are different types of rectifiers as well. There ones that use passive circuitry, such as diode bridge. Others use active components such as iGBT gates or SCRs to regulate DC bus voltage. Active rectifiers can assist the line filter in minimizing line harmonics as well. Common terms used for drive rectifiers are Active Front End (MASTERDIVES drive family), Active Line Module (Sinamics drive family). Now finally, drives use the DC bus voltage produced by the rectifier and convert it into a modulated signal used to rotate the motor. Other terms for DC/AC drives: inverter (MASTERDRIVES), motor module (Sinamics). So to answer the initial question about the difference between filter and rectifier: they perform a different function. Active Power Filters were commonly used with 6RA24 drive family quite a few years ago. Considering Siemens multi-axis drive system now, I would recommend a Sinamics S120 drive family with Active Line Module, Active Interface Module (basic filter, reactor combination), and Clean Line Filter.

OLundberg Posts: 10 Rating: (0)	What I think you refer to regarding Active Power Filter is a Active Harmonic Filter installed in Shunt with the drive. The Active Front End is also a an active filter but installed in series with the drive. The AFE originally was used for regenerative applications but can also be used to the reduce THD < 5% up to 50th harmonic. In regenerative mode the THD > 5% up to the 50th harmonic. For applications to reduce THD such as to comply with IEEE-519 it is technically better to use a 6-pulse drive + AHF in shunt rather than an AFE because there are several advantages. 1. Energy loss - the AFE has double the loss compared to a 6-pulse drive around 4-5%. The AHF installed in shunt is only sized 15-30% (depending on grid impedance) of the drive size so the total loss of the system is about 2% better. 2% lower losses and operating 8000+ hours per year translate into a significant LCC-advantage. 2. Availability - If the FE fails on a AFE, the drive is 100% out-of order. Installing AHF in shunt means that the AHF can fail without stopping operation of the drive thus allowing higher availability. 3. Harmonics - The AFE has significant switching ripple above the 50th Harmonic . This is not normally measured today, but the THD is then >5% in total. AHF has insignficant switching ripple as it operates at a much higher frequency. There is a SIVACON AHF rated at 100A that is very good. Money - The AFE in single drive installation is normally cheaper to buy but if you do a proper LCC analysis including the electrical power saving and difference in availability the overall 5 year cost might look very different. When looking at projects with multiple drives it is quite often possible to use one AHF with multiple drives. The AHF is then very competetive on capital cost alone.

OLundberg Posts: 10 Rating: (0)	An added bonus feature is the filters capacity to function as a power- and power-quality meter. Normally there are features that allow a "smart grid" to be established where the filter can be accessed from the control room and events are logged. Features such as alerting service people are also available.
