Adapt Siemens PLC program to a PLC from other manufacturer

kike_badajoz Posts: 7 Rating: (0)	I'm starting to work with PLCs and from what I've read, general concepts in PLC programming are common to all manufacturers, but also there are a lot of differences in terms of I/O addressing, memory organization and instruction sets, so what you program in a PLC is not easily interchangeable to a PLC from another manufacturer. Currently I want to implement a Master-Slave system in which the master is a Siemens PLC and the slave is an external custom device. And I wonder to what extent the program that I will write for the Siemens PLC will be portable to a PLC from other manufacturer. - Is any of the available languages (ladder, instruction list...) more useful in terms of code portability? - Must I make a new program in all cases when I use a PLC from other manufacturer? - Can a program for a Siemens PLC be incompatible with other Siemens PLCs (for example S7-300 with S7-400)? Although you can't answer those particular questions, I would like you to share any particular experiences too. Thanks for your help.

Marcjan Platinum Member Joined: 4/22/2010 Last visit: 3/31/2025 Posts: 5697 Rating: (716)	Hello, Well for programming there is a sort of standard, IEC 61131, you can search for that. http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/8790932 In case of hardware, i believe every brand has it's own tricks, so there is a big difference. 300 programs should run in a 400, but again the hardware and therefore the (build-in)functions, addressing differ. So some work to do when using a program written for a 300 in a 400. Regards Marcjan
