The 3964 protocol provides link layer functionalities on serial links. It supports transparent transmission of data on point-to-point connections, operating in half-duplex mode, and can be run on physical connections like RS232 or RS422/485. The 3964(R) version of 3964 uses a Bloc Ckeck Control character to enhance error detection. It is very often use together with the RK512 extension. RK512 provides extra headers for the the transport of commands and/or address information about the transported data. RK512 is not mandatory but very common in the Simatic S5 world for instance, for CPU-CPU communication or CPU to PC communication over serial links.
