Cam of points

DavidBrown Gold Member Joined: 6/29/2012 Last visit: 5/31/2023 Posts: 974 Rating: (7)	We are developping cam profiles that in fact represent 3rd order motion : constant acceleration with jerk, constant velocity, etc. We are now using segments in the cam for each section. However the number of segments is limited to 50 in a cam. It might be possible that our cams are longer, and thus not fit anymore in this maximum number of segements. The alternative would be to use points instead of segments. You can have 1000 points in a cam, or even 10000 in the newest versions. However I want the cam to be exactly the same as it was constructed with the segments. Before some segments were linear, other 2nd order (constant acceleration), other 3rd order (constant jerl). There is no way to tell the system how to interpollate between the points, how will it now what order it has to use? The positions of X and Y will be the same for the points cam as for the segments cam, but I don't know how the curve between the points will be interpolated.

Perhaps more points, or an optimization, or a different method (e.g. Beizer) may mitigate the effects.

Between them, the system interpolation is active, you set in the cam config. 8.3.2 System interpolation (S7-1500T) With system interpolation, the transitions are interpolated according to the interpolation type and the response in the boundary points of the transition segment.
