Can ASCII strings be sent from MP-377?

I know it can be done using a PLC, but I do not want to add a PLC just to send the ASCII commands if I do not have to. Here is an example; I want to be able to send the ASCII string "3Ba2#a" through the comm port when I press a button on the HMI.Should I have the button run a script and the script set the ASCII string to the tag? Any ideas if this is possible?? Thank you for your comments.
