 Thanks for the reply but I don't think this contains information to help me solve the problem. I don't have an issue establishing an online connection with the PLC. I just want to run both the PLC and the HMI in simulation. The PLC simulation works fine but the HMI simulation cannot access the PLC. In TIA Portal V13 I was able to run both in simulation without any problems but this does not work in V14.

 Well, my HMI (TP1500) is version 12.0.0.0, so I guess there's my problem. But this brings me to another question: The last time I tried to upgrade my HMI to a higher version, it automatically changed the button style, fonts and the general appearance of the faceplates which is extremely unwanted. Is there a way to upgrade without changing any of the styles?
