choosing a motion control

Hello, 

I kinda need some suggestion concerning a motion control.

I have a transporter that travels in trajectory  100 meters, and in every 8-9 meter has a point stop.

At this moment I am controlling this transporter(with a weight more than 10 ton) with  relays and adjusting the (configuration of these relays according to position hence reducing the speed) speed(Hz) as the transporter approaches the set point. I have and incremental encoder as a feedback.

What I need from to know now is which is the best motion control for my application with PTO and  a huge servomotor and a drive, or with analog output driving the VFD and some kind of PID controller with incremental encoder s as a feedback?

 hi,

as you have mentioned transporter weight is 10 ton so i think servo is not a solution economical point of view,so it is better to use VFD and if positioning is not need with high accuracy then you can use limit switch.

 Hello,

Actually, I didn't faced "Huge" Servo motors. 

I think the best solution is to use an induction motor with VSD.

The induction motor can be a small motor if you can get a suitable gear box.

You can control the VSD using analog signal of communication based on the position feedback. And for accurate movement of the transporter, use motor with Brake.

Thanks for the replays guys.

At the time i made this question i was about to do a project  in the detail given in my thread above.
And now that project is up and running!

For your curiosity I chose a VFD with asychnronous motor with break of course and i am driving it with an analog output from PLC with a 12bit a resolution and a 1000PPR encoder fed back to HSC of the PLC.

I had some suggestions from IBN-Service and some other guys in the forum -> here is the thread and then I made algorithm for ramp down the transporter and positioning -> so the PLC does all the calculation. 

Anyways again thanks for your effort, i really appreciate it.

 ADD I MORE THING SPEED FEED BACK THOUGH ENCODER BEACAUSE 10 TON OF WHEIGHT HANDLING WITH TRANSPORTER HOIST UP AND DOWN WILL BE INVOLVE IN THIS CASE SPECIALY DOWN SIDE KEEPING 10 TON WEIGHT GRAVITY FORCE WILL EFFECT ON SETPOINT COMMAND IN THIS APPLICATION I PREFFER CLOSE LOOP WITH AUTO TUNENING.

don't forget to use dc bus braking module for dc bus overvoltage protection during braking because it is all about 10 ton material handling application.
