I am trying to establish Ethernet data exchange between the following stations:

1) CPU 317-2 DP with 343-1 Lean card, programmed with TIA Portal v11 sp2

2) CPU 319-3 PN/DP (using on-board ProfiNet port), programmed with Step 7 v5.5 sp4

I cannot simply define a TCP connection each end, as the PN port on the 319 will not support this.  If I try to define a S7 connection, the 343-1 card means that (as I understand) the data exchange can only be one-way, and trying to use GET / PUT blocks in TIA Portal is defeated as the block configuration won't allow the 317 to be the local station (as I can't select the 343-1 card as an interface).

That leaves using Open Communication to create a TCP connection.  I can set this up in the 319 (although have yet to successfully create the connection), but cannot do this for the 317 as TIA Portal will only enable the Open Communication FBs (TCON, TSEND etc.) if the CPU has a PN port.

Is Ethernet communication actually possible with this particular hardware layout, or am I making some fundamental error somewhere?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

have a look on page 95 to see what kind of ethernet-communication is possible. For PUT/GET with CPU317 and CP341-1lean as server you must activate the PUT/GET-access in the proberties of the DB that should be accessed. 

For Open Communication there are several FAQ´s:

How do you program the communication blocks FB63 "TSEND", FB64 "TRCV", FB65 "TCON" and FB66 "TDISCON" in order to use the TCP protocol for data exchange by means of the integrated PROFINET interface of an S7-300/S7-400 CPU?

This FAQ also exists for UDP and ISO-on-TCP protocol.
