Communicate remotely to S7-300 using MD741-1

raceman111 Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	I wondered if anybody could help me with my problem please. I've been searching for a solution for a long time and seem to be getting nowhere. I have 2 stations running in different parts of the country and would like to monitor/modify them remotely. Each station has a MD741-1 with static IP attached to it. I was told by Siemens that I do not need a Scalance. But all the examples I can find use Scalance. I can not figure out my settings in Simatic Manager to communicate with the PLC's. I can access each MD741-1 through https so I know that I can talk to these. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, raceman111

Access is made via a gateway that uses the NAT (Network Address Translation) and NAPT (Network Address Port Translation) services. You could use any devices supporting that features. Just like a Siemens recommendation is to use Scalance + SOFTNET Security Client ... Best regards, Hristo Mihalev

raceman111 Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Thank you for the reply Hristo, I already have a MD741-1 connected to the S7-300 and I would like to use a VPN for security purposes. But I have not been able to create a VPN yet. Is this the best method to use a VPN?I can use a local IT company to assist in setting up a VPN to the MD741-1 if I need to as I cannot connect for some reason using the Greenbow VPN Client. But I do not want to use the IT company if this will not work without the use of a Scalance. Regards, Philip

Rated X Posts: 1547 Rating: (129)	Hi Philip, as I can find in the manual chapter 7: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/31385703 the MD741-1 is using an "default" IPSec which should work with any IPSec softclient or router. You may have a problem with your GPRS connection: I often had the problem with IPSec over GPRS that the provider is blocking the IPSec traffic. You can check this with a port scan to the IPSec ports 500 and 4500 / UDP. Or ask your provider; often the VPN option costs more. Rated X

I had the same scenario with an MD741-1 without the use of a SCALANCE S, and wanted to setup a VPN tunnel between a PC and remote sites for monitoring/programming etc. I found the answer here, Example 3.5, Page 86 - "Remote access - VPN tunnel example with MD741-1 and SOFTNET Security Client": The link to the manual is: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/21718449 You will need SOFTNET Security Client software v3 or higher to get it to work, but it doesn't require the SCALANCE S hardware. 6GK1704-1VW03-0AA0 Softnet v3 Software 6GK1704-1VW04-0AA0 Softnet v4 Software

raceman111 Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi Tony,Thank you for this reply. I actually bought the software a couple of weeks ago to try this and thought I'd give it another go this morning. Everything was going great, I went through the Security Configuration Tool and got the MD741-1 set up ok. Then it told me to open Security Client v3 which is where my new problem starts. It says "Unable to start ipsec". Make sure you have the appropriate access rights. Contact your administrator. I am the Administrator on my PC and have full priviledges? Can you help with this one?
