Generally S7 communication via Ethernet ports are common, open user communication or Modbus TCP protocol also can be implemented. With serial comm ports available you can also create on both sides user communication with own defined messages or use also Modbus RTU protocol. With different interfaces on both sides some Gateways changed protocols on both sides to be workable together. Profibus DP can be also implemented here but again, required HW modules need to be available on both sides.

Based on these FAQs from simens India, the S7-200 Smart has an on-board Ethernet connection that supports Get/Put instructions; these are also available on the S7-1200, on the on-board Profinet port.
