Communicating with S7 PLCs using internet

Suppose I have at the plant several S7 300 CPUs connected with MPI network and I want to be able to have remote connection with these CPUs. I don't want to use teleservice (either analog, ISDN or GSM). If I connect one of the CPUs with CP343 (Lean), then I connect CP343 to LAN at the plant and assign to it local IP number (i.e. 192.168.0.100), netmask and gateway will it work? How can I access this CP over internet? What settings need to be made in STEP7? Do I need any other software? Is VPN connection also possible? I would be gratefull for any information. Regards BB

Hi, Because the Privat addresses are not routed to Internet, it is not one on one possible. When you use a VPN Tunnel between a Softnet security Client (there where STEP7 is) and on the other side a Scalance S (612 or 613) then you can built up a VPN safe communication. The only thing you have to do on the PLC-side is making a forward rule from the ADSL-modem to the Scalance S so that the Tunnel is from your PC (with Softnet Security Client) to the Scalance S on the PLC side and after that your on the network where you want to be. So you have to give the gateway-addres to the Scalance S module and the Scalance S module have to be forwarded to the ADSL-modem.

I'd like to add the following link: How do you configure a VPN tunnel between a PC station and SCALANCE S61x V2.1 via the Internet with the SOFTNET Security Client Edition 2005 HF1? Furthermore the Scalance S602 isn't capable of setting up a VPN tunnel.

If I undrestood well, at STEP7 side I need additional software package "Softnet security Client" and device Scalance S (612 or 613). Is the software supplied with Scalance S (612 or 613)? Is it possible to connect CP343 directly to internet network (and assign to it global IP address)? Will it work? Best regards, BB

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Dear BB, I am sorry, but the CP 343-1 does not support PPPoE. You will have to use a Router at least to connect to the Internet. If you use a Router you can forward the required IP Ports to the CP, no doubt. Best regards J_Bell
