Hello Saradhi; Here are a couple of references that should help you discover the range of protocols supported by Siemens automation equipment: SIMATIC NET Industrial Communication with PG/PC Volume 1 - Basics System Manual |

What we can call RS-485 and RS-232. What are PC/PPI cable and PC Adapter USB.

Hello Saradhi; The standard description of communication systems commonly usedis the OSI/ISO 7-layer networkmodel, described in the following Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model I have taken the liberty to extract a table from that page showing the different standards that occcupy the Physical and Application layers of the model, in a very simplistic way. See the attached picture. The RS-232, RS-422, and all such "Recommended Standards" (developped by the American military in the 1960s and 1970s) are part of the physical layer. What we call "Protocols" (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus-DP...)occupy the higher levels, especially the Application layer. Note that every acronym in the table that ends with the letter "P" is also known as a protocol (TCP, for example, is the Transmission Control Protocol, IP is Internet Protocol, SNMP is the simple Network Management protocol...). The Data Link,Trannsport and Network layers take care of logical addressing and data transport schemes for the different protocols. Study this Wikipedia document carefully, and come back to us if you have more questions. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier P.S. The PC/PPI and PC Adapter cables are converters at the Physical layer (from RS-232 to RS-485) and alsogateways from the PC serial comms to different protocols (PPI, MPI, Profibus). D.C. |
