Communication with PLC from remote network

Lets say: I have my computer in internet network at home, there is static IP. I have PLC (s7-300, s7-200 and s7-1200) in company's local network. Router into which the PLCs are connected is also in internet network with static IP. Is it possible to go on-line with those PLCs remotely? What do I need to make it possible? best regards siemes user

The sollution is VPN connection between your home and plant. I hope you know what is VPN. If not try to google for it as it is a lot of info to write here about VPN. I can simply say that VPN makes your home and plant internal networks to act as one network (you don't have to worry about internet). Also keep in mind that not all routers support VPN capability. Using of proffesional routers is recommended (from my experience). There are some manufacturers for SOHO routers with VPN, but its better to not use them. Siemens has some VPN capable SCALANCE models.

One PC which is connected to internal (plant network) and external (internet network). The idea is to connect remotely to this PC and from it to have look to the plant' PLC. This is cheaper decision and is useful in big company which has and already built secure level for access from outside. In other way you should use (like Darius said ) switches which "supports" VPN with necessary secure level. And about Siemens Scalance S61x put in search filed here "Scalance vpn" and you'll see some helpful examples... Hope this will helps. With regards, Hristo Mihalev

For example: • GSM modems (e.g. the TC65i, the SINAUT MD720-3 GSM/GPRS), • GSM remote systems and • GSM mobile phone with modem function. For connection to the SIMATIC controller there are serial interfaces such as the RS232 (EIA-232) interface. If understand it right, it is possible to connect with PLC by mobile phone. Lets say i use Nokia e51 which has modem function, i just need cable. Am i right? Did anyone tried this? what cable do i have to use? what soft do i have to use?

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Dear Siemens user, I am not sure... but if I read the Nokia HP I see that the E51 has an USB interface... no RS232... It supports GPRS, EDGE and UMTS... but CSD??? It is not mentioned. By the way, as long as you do not want to use a Teleservice Adaptor you will have to program the PLC - Modem communication yourself... this is not really easy to do. Needless to say that this would not include PG functions with the S7-300 / S7-400 in this certain case. If you read the mentioned manual you will also find the information that CSD is by far not available everywhere anymore. If you insist on an interface Mobile based I would use EDGE or UMTS, as long as it is available at the location you want to use it at. Best regards J_Bell
