Connecting PNP Incremental measuring device to PLC

Simon N Posts: 44 Rating: (0)	Hi,. I have a Kubler PNP/NPN Incremental encoder which we want to attach to the PLC, Could anyone give me a quick overview as to how to connect these babies to my plc and how to connect this device and obtain and convert the data into a dimension.

Ups! What kind of software do you have - Step7? Perhaps above mentioned is not useful...And write the order number of that encoder. Best regards, Hristo Mihalev

Simon N Posts: 44 Rating: (0)	Hi sory for the late reply, I am back on this project now, The plc is 1200 1212C The data sheet for the encoders is attached, the model sepcification is 5000.7154.4096 which means Push Pull output with inverted signal ( power supply 10-30v dc) M12 8 pin connector Pulse rate 4096 My undetstanding of these encoders is low and the help from the UK supplier is poor. Simple questions (perhaps not simple answers ) From this encoder how many cables would I connect into the plc , 1 or 2 ? How would I read/count the pulses from the encoder within the PLCto determine an dimension. Attachment 5000-5020_en.pdf (1069 Downloads)

Gorp Posts: 89 Rating: (16)	Supposing that you want: - to count up and down - don't want to reset your counter after every revolution of your encoder - to use HSC_1 you connect the A-signal to I0.0 and the B-signal to I0.1. Make sure that you isolate alle the other wires except of coarse the power supply. So you connect: Pin 1-> 0V(M) of your 24V supply Pin 2-> +24V of your 24V supply Pin 3-> I0.0 Pin 4-> isolate pin 5-> I0.1 Pin 6-> isolate Pin 7-> isolate Pin 8-> isolate For HSC_1 the count value will be available as a DWORD in ID1000. Moreinformation abouthow to use the HSC's is available on this forum, in the user manual and the 'help" of Step 7 TIA. I hope this helps you further. If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask them.

Push/Pull means that the output has 2transistors, one that switches the output to + 24V and one that switches the output to 0V. This means that the output will always have a well defined level, high or low and can be used on NPN as well as PNP PLC-inputs. Simon N What does this mean in terms of the signal pulses. If the encoder moves 1/2 turn clockwise wouldI expect 1028 pulses on A 0 pulses on B or 1028 pulses on A and B Likewise for anticlockwise ? 0 pulses on A 1028 pulses on B or 1028 on both ? - The number of pulsesof the encoder is the same for A and B, so 1/2 turn will give you 2048 pulses on both outputs. Simon N Phase variance The manufacturer states a phase variance between A & B can detect a direction change How do I detect a phase variance within Step 7 - The A and B signal have a fase shift of 90 degrees, because of that the PLC knows the direction the encoder turns. To use this you have to set the HSC as "AB Quadrature". Here you have the choice 1X and 4X. 4X gives you 4 times more counts then the number of pulses per revolution of the encoder. By using 4X you can use an encoder with a lower number of pulses which is usually cheaper.

I am struggling to understand how to program change of direction, To detect phase variance (change of direction) do I need to have both A & B connected the to PLC ie a= HSC1 and b = hsc2 , I have seen the information for the CTRL-HSC block in step 7. Does this block control the detection of the phase variance. Is it as simple as connecting HSC_1 to the HSCconnector and HSC_2 to the Dir Tag, Or is there a specific command to detect Phase Variance with step 7 that will then signal the Dir Tag One final question: I this is a mesuring encoder rotation would be 1-2 turns per sec, would you consider 2056 pulses high speed. The number of HSC is limited, I have 4 measuring sensors each with A&B PLC1212C is there a solution outside of the HSC's ?

As I explained above the PLC will take care of that when properly set up. The S7-1212C has 4 HSC's so you can connect your 4 sensors without problem.

Simon N Posts: 44 Rating: (0)	Hi Guys, I am still having issue's with my HSC and the device connected to it We have the device connected to HSC2, (wire A = Input 2 wire b=Inpuit 3) I have the HSC turned on and it is set to Count , AB quadrature Phase 1 X Start address is set to 1004 Process Image set to Cyclic PI I have a PLC tag deffined ID1004 DWord I have then placed a field on the HMI to view the value of the PLC tag. This value show '0' and does nor change as the encoder is moved. I have also used move to move the data from one viarable to another. When viewing the network whilst moving the encoder the network shows a static value of 16 00000,00000 Viewing the lights on the inputs the lights are flashing as the encoder is turned, Am I missing something in the code to see a change in value as the encoder is moved ?
