OK so here is the problem in as much detail as possible

I was working online with a CPU314 2DP 6ES7 314-6CG03-0AB0, connection to the PLC was via Siemens PG M2 running Step7 v5.4, using the inbuilt card CP5611 set for MPI as follows

PG only master on bus

Node "0"

CP5611, baud rate 187.5kbps

after i had finished on that project i then wanted to work on a new PLC, fresh project, so set all components in the hardware configuration, the cpu is: CPU315 2DP, 6ES7 315-2AG10-0AB0

I left the settings of the interface as above and though it would be OK as it was a new project, 

then the trouble started, since i tried to down load to the new PLC i have not been able to get on line with any plc we have in our installation, I have tried every setting i can think of, 

we also have a usb adaptor 6ES7 972-0CB20-0XA0  -  V1.3, the other number on the unit is SVP A2505048, unfortunately someone kindly borrowed the short cable, so i chased down the pin out on the internet and made one as per the drawing but when i set the interface as master on the network the MPI light blinks once and then goes out 

so to try and sort out what the problem is i tried doing a basic upload from either a CPU314 2DP or CPU315 2DP, I set a project called "UpLoad" and used the following settings and got these warnings

PC adaptor auto - the connection to module could not be configured (13:4542)

PC Adaptor (MPI) - PG/PC only master on bus, address 0, trans rate 187.5kbps, highest station address 31, after trying to upload MPI light blinks once and goes out, usb led blinks every second until laptop gives warning: Online: Station not online (33:16914)

Next test with built in PCI card CP5611, using genuine MPI cable from Siemens

CP5611 adaptor - Auto - The connection to the module could not be configured (13:4542)

CP5611 adaptor - MPI (not master) Online: no other active partner can be found (33:16944)

CP5611 adaptor - MPI (master on bus) Online: BUS Faulty (33:16945)

I tested the usb adaptor on another laptop we have with the same results, this laptop is running step7 v5.5

I also check is the firmware version of the usb adaptor it is V1.3

in the past all that was required for an upload was the select New> give it a name> then upload station to PG, with no problems, always set for node "0" only master on bus unchecked 

all of this is since i tried to connect to the CPU315 2DP!!!

Hopefully this gives enough info for someone to understand what I am doing wrong

my only other though is what if there was something wrong with the CPU315 and it caused an issue with the internal card CP5611, is this possible?

for first I'll be try select higher station number for search, more than 31. With econd solution can be used DP interface on CPUs with also PG/PC DP Interface (Adapter or CP5611) selection. Give it try. Last solution can be interesting, but you need simple DP connector with back side connector connection - PG/PC. Put that DP connector to PLC, put your cable from PC interface to that connector back connection (simply through DP connector) and select resistor terminator to ON. Try connect now, this was helpful to me.

I don't understand, why you simply didn't create your own 2 wire cable with 2 DP connectors on both sides???? This must work perfectly if you don't have one now. Also did you try that my recommendation with one DP through connector connected? You have also Node check inside PG/PC interface where you can see quickly nodes number on net, this is another good idea for search, also you can test your faulty Adapter/card there.

your problem relates not only to this one CPU(315-2AG10), rigth?

If it does, the problem is on the CPU-side und I would try to reset the CPU to factory settings.

In following manual you can read how to do it:

SIMATIC S7-300 CPU 31xC and CPU 31x: Installation  chapter 9.5

If you can´t connect to any CPU, wo have to search on programming-device. Try to reset the PG-interfaces, This FAQ will help:

How do you generally parameterize the PG/PC interface and how do you ensure that the device driver can be selected and is visible?

Also did you try that my recommendation with one DP through connector connected? You have also Node check inside PG/PC interface where you can see quickly nodes number on net, this is another good idea for search, also you can test your faulty Adapter/card there.

I tried with a profibus cable directly into to the PC/PG same results,I also tried your recommendation of plugging it through a profibus plug with the bus terminator on, same result

 correct it relates to 7 plc's in total, in the past to check online connection all that was required was make a new project set CP5611 to auto and up load,

also going online to do comparison with stored program on PG/PC

this has only occured since trying to log onto the CPU315 2DP, I think there is something qrong with it and it has cause a problem in the hardware

I will read through the SIMATIC installation manual shortly

make that recommended test of card functionality. I had some experiences with after long time - fault of CP5611 in some PCI slot, then I had put CP to another PCI slot. In PG/PC interface select MPI profile for your 5611 and in Properties can be Test of nodes and also driver functionality. Do you have CP5611 functionality ok? Look to Win devices if there i's some problem after time. This can be complex problem, hard to say, simply try make tests. Better select right profile - MPI or DP instead of Auto.
