Hello,

I finally got my PLC and I stuck on first step.

I am trying to connect PLC to PC, so I can upload program to PLC. I am using standard 9 pin cable I got with PLC and this one to connect PLC with PC.

I got this message:

The USB multi-master cable is not attached or no USB device could be found.

What I am doing wrong?

Which Cable you have ?

For establishing connection between S7 200 PLC and PC via USB interface, you have two possibilities.
1. 6ES7901-3DB30-0XA0
2. 6ES7972-0CB20-0XA0This cable is more expensive than the previous one because you can use it to communicate to S7 200 and S7 300 / S7 400 as well.

Although the above words are mine as per my post in the above mentioned thread but it was an old post from 2010.

Just an update here is the PC adapter with part number "6ES7972-0CB20-0XA0" is a phased out product as from Nov. 2013.

You have to oder the new one "6GK1571-0BA00-0AA0"

And there is no other way to transfer the program from PLC to PC except with this cable?

For all possibilities to Connect (Upload and download to S7-200)

1. Using USBinterface PPI cable:
   6ES7901-3DB30-0XA0
2. orUsingUSBinterface6ES7972-0CB20-0XA0--Phased Out
   
3. orUsingUSBinterface6GK1571-0BA00-0AA0
4. Using DP interface of a PG:
   Profibus cable with two bus connectors
5. Using Serial Communication RS-232:
   PPI cable6ES7901-3CB30-0XA0

And please note the followings:

• Most of programmers don't like option 5 although is is too cheap because all modern PCs now doesn't have RS-232 port. And more over this cable would be suitable only for S7-200
• Options 1 is based on PPI protocol but via USB port of PCs. So it's suitable for modern laptops.
• Option 2 & 3 are commonly used as these cable can be used in programming S7-200/ 300/ 400.

thanks for detailed explanation. I am concerned about connection to s7-1200 and s7-1500!  Do these models have direct Ethernet module for LAN connection and no additional interface/hardware is needed.

yes , all S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLC hav a onboard LAN interface and need no additional HW for the Connection.

Hello,

S7 1200 and S7 1500 both support Profinet protocol with onboard PN port . Simple and fast way to establish communication between two PLC is I-device communication. You dont need any more communication blocks. Define one s71500 PLC as IO controller and S71200 as I-Device. At S7 1200 once IO controller is defined in PLC device configuration then do the Virtual Memory maping.
