Convert S5 115U local I/O to S7-400

epanella Regular Member Joined: 1/28/2009 Last visit: 11/4/2022 Posts: 6 Rating: (0)	i have a legacy S5-115U plc with local I/O on board, now i have to migrate to S7-400 and i want to change only the cpu and mantain S5 I/O module. Is there any way to connect these module to the S7-400 for example with an adapter "local I/O -> Profibus" or an extension of the S7-400? The goal is to mantain actually S5 I/O module, change only the cpu without buy also S7 I/O module (DI-DO-ecc) and exploit old module, but i need some device to connect old module to S7-400

dchartier Grandmaster Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 6/4/2023 Posts: 12033 Rating: (2595)	Hello epanella; Under certain conditions (specific rack numbers and use of IM 314) you can une an IM 463-2 in the S7-400 central rack to connect to S5 I/O racks: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/42681 Here is an extract from the S7-400 Module Data Specifications manual describing the Im 463-2(you will find the link in the above FAQ): *7.1 Using SIMATIC S5 Expansion Units in an S7-400Area of Application*** The IM 463-2 interface module is used for distributed connection of S5 expansion units to an S7-400.You can use the IM 463-2 in the CR of the S7-400. In the S5 expansion unit, you use an IM 314.This allows you to connect the following S5 expansion units to an S7-400: · EU 183U · EU 185U · EU 186U · ER 701-2 · ER 701-3 Accordingly, you can use all digital and analog I/O modules suitable for these Eus or ERs. *Maximum Expansion* You can use up to four IM 463-2s in one S7-400 CR.At each IM 463-2 interface (C1 and C2), you can connect up to four S5 expansion units in a distributed configuration. You can connect further EUs centrally to the EUs connected in the distributedconfiguration. *Addressing of the S5 modules* All S5 address areas are available (P, Q, IM3, IM4) Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier

Examine the document suggested earlier, follow the guidelines, use the appropriate cables and terminators, prepare an intelligent address configuration for the S5 I/O, and you should be able to make the transition. Sure there were some initial hiccups but thereafter things have been smooth for last 2-3 years. If fact initially the customer was not sure so we has the S5 CPU rack also powered up ( But disconnected from I/O racks ) for 1 year. Now they have removed the S5 CPU rack. ( That would mean that by now that have faith in the new system ) Navnag
