Converting date and time

I was able to get the example from siemens working as far as getting my data to log but I think my limited knowledge of strings, and the complexity of converting date and time to one is my problem. Is there an example anyone is aware of that explains this? Here is the siemens example I'm referring to. So what is your usecase? can you give us more details? what do you have tried already?
