Look at the table in the following FAQ, you will see that these are the 2 protocols available with the CP 340: What protocols for the point-to-point connection are supported by CPs in S7-300 / S7-400 and where can you get further information? Think of all (PLC) communications as a conversation you and I could have on a phone line, or the exchange we are having here on the forum. The phone line (or the computer Ethernet infrastructure)transmits signals between you and me, like the serial line between the 2 partners (CP 340 and DCS). But if you and I speak only our mother languages (mine is not English either) then even if we hear sounds on our phone lines or read text on the screen we cannot talk to each other. We have to decide both to speak a common tongue, such as English in order to establish communications between us. This is a the same as a common protocol between PLC partners. So again, does your DCS support the protocols that come with the CP 340? Very likely 3964R is out of the question, only S5-type partners support it. Possibly there is a serial card in the DCS that supports straight ASCII, look for it. But generally ASCII is used toread datafrom barcode readers ands such, not to exchange data with a partner. There are even 3rd-parties that sell a Modbus RTU (master/slave) package for the CP 340, if that is an option on theDCS. Searchfor them on the web (but there will be no support for this external package from Siemens in case of trouble). But until you can find a common protocol between your CP and the DCS serial communicationmodules you are working in vain. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier
