CPU315 2-PN/DP connecting to ethernet

Zer0 Regular Member Joined: 6/15/2011 Last visit: 8/2/2023 Posts: 25 Rating: (0)	Hello, I have three CPU315 2PN/DP PLCs they are separate machines they are not connected together at all, but each have total of 3 nodes. I want to be able to interface with the PLCs using the ethernet port, is that possible? If so, how can I assign the PLC an IP? or if i connect it to a router will it obtain it automatically using the DHCP? How can I then connect to it from S7-v5.5? Thank you for your help...

playerslight Posts: 1064 Rating: (72)	yes you can go into your hardware config and assign them an ethernet address, i would use a static address instead of dchp . then you should be able to connect to them through ethernet as long as you set up you pg interface to ethernet ty more questions come back and ask this should be explained in getting started manual in more detail

Connect all 3 PLC to a switch. You can use port 1 or port 2 of PLC's for this purpose. If so, how can I assign the PLC an IP? or if i connect it to a router will it obtain it automatically using the DHCP? --> Please see the attached file. Double click the PN-IO option of PLC. In a windows that opens click "Properties" button. New which opens you can define the router address. How can I then connect to it from S7-v5.5? --> You need to define all the three PLC's in same project. Then connect all of them to same ethernet bus in hardware configuration. Then connect all of them to same ethernet bus in hardware configuration. All of them should have IP of same class. Thats it. Just an observation here, to access your PLC’s through Ethernet you need also set the PG/PC interface to TCP/IP mode (go to Options .. Set PG/PC Interface) and have the IP address in the same class or subnet as mentioned. Moreover the PLC’s don’t need to be in the same S7 Project, they can still bein separate projects!

I have interfaced with each unit and tested it with ethernet and it works great, but each PLC has a totally random IP address. I want to know if I can change the IP in HW config and then download the program to PLC again using the ethernet? Would it cause any interuptions since i am changing the IP address of the unit i'm interfaced with..

Indeed you can set static IP in the HW config then download to PLC. In that case you will have static IP which never change.

Aret Posts: 2348 Rating: (262)	If you change IP from DHCP to static you need to redownload HW, so of course it would cause some interruption. Please mention, that assigning 2 similar IP addresses can cause whole network malfunction - you should assign addresses with care.

Yes I understand that more than one machine having same IP on the same network would mess up alot of things, however my question is, for example, if the IP of my PLC is 192.168.1.2, and I want to change it to 192.168.0.5 When i'm downloading the new HW config into PLC with new IP, at what point will that new IP take affect? after the download is 100% complete, or somewhere inbetween because if it does take affect inbetween then the communication between PLC and my computer will be disrupted. Thanx

fbelic Posts: 327 Rating: (28)	Greetings When you are changing the IP address of CPU, it is convinient to download the configuration directly from Hardware Configuration editor, because it offers you the possibility to chose CPU based on MAC address, which is fixed and is written on CPU module. So you don't have to worry about IP change. Best regards
