I ended up taking the whole "certified s7 programmer" track in the following couple of years, and have learned a lot there. Beside that, the manuals offered in this topic are great to use.

It is retentive by default (i.e. data stored in a DB is saved even after CPU power failure). It helps you to structure your symbols in groups (DBs). It has complex data types which are not easily represented in symbol table (e.g. Date_and_Time). It has structure ability, so it can save a lot of time if you have a repetitive pattern (e.g. Motor) for example: Struct M001 Cmd_Fwd Bool Cmd_Rev Bool Running Bool Healthy Bool End Struct Struct M002 Cmd_Fwd Bool Cmd_Rev Bool Running Bool Healthy Bool End Struct When you attempt to use this data in a function, then you can call it like this: (M001.Running, M001.Healthy) In repetitive pattern, you can easily find and replace M001 with M002 There are two types of DB; Shared and Instance. Shared can be accessed from any function FC. Instance is attached to one instance of FB. FB (Function Block) An FB is used for repetitive functions. e.g. if you have 100 motors in your project, then you don't need to handle each motor with several networks, but you can use an FB (e.g. named "Motor") and use it 100 times. This FB for example can have inputs (Motor_Running, Motor_Healthy, Motor_Isolator, Motor_Safety_Switch, Motor_Actual_Speed) and outputs(Motor_Command_FWD,Motor_Command_Rev , Motor_Ref_Speed) FB must have a DB attached to it to hold its data. This helps you to monitor each instance of the FB on its own. FC (Function) Like FB, but it doesn't have a DB attached to it, Not necessary to have inputs/outputs. Can access data from shared DB. I would not put to much time in the 200 system, unless you have to deal with that system a lot. The 200 is about to disapear. Instead off that have a look at Tia-portal, that is the future if we want it or not. After getting to know the systems a few courses like Ton Verra mentioned is a good thing to do. It's a long way to get there, but for me i wouldn't have missed it. You never get to know every thing, and learn every day, for me that's the fun part. Offcourse reading and asking here is verry welcome and helpfull. Regards, Marcjan
