Differnt Profiles in profibus communication.

dchartier Grandmaster-Expert Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 1/24/2025 Posts: 12330 Rating: (2702)	Hello Thavas; The main reason for setting parameters in the Profibus profile dialog is to give the Profibus configurator enough information to calculate the T_Bit value that will allow your particular network to operate at optimum speed and reliability. One of the information the configurator needs is what protocols you will be using on your Profibus network: DP, FMS, PG routing, S7 functions.... The different profiles tell the configurator the limits (in bus speed, number of nodes, number of possible masters...) that the bus will operate in. By selecting a profile, you allow the configurator to adapt to your network needs. Thavas Posts: 25 Rating: (1)	Hello Daniel, First thanks for your information, as you said, i understand that different profiles will use different protocols, Profibus is a common standard, in that different protocol is used right? Depends on the profile the speed, nodes, master and slave configuration will differ right? If you find any of the above statements are wrong, let me know. Different protocols are used with Profibus, and the requirements can be very different. For example, in the following attachment (from an oldSiemens Profibus Workshop ppt) shows the similarities and differences between DP and FMS protocols, in terms of thwe ISO/OSI 7-layer model. Note that only layers 1 and 2 are shared by the protocols (which allows the same physical connections, same speeds...); but layer 7 is very different, because basically DP is a master-slave cyclic communication protocol for small amounts of data/slave, and FMS is a master-master acyclic protocol that carries medium amounts of data in messages between masters{Note; this is a gross oversimplification, there is a lot more complexity to these standards]. So by selecting the proper profile, you are telling the configurator what to "expect" and what to compensate for, in order to have a stable and optimized network. Then you tell it at what speed to operate, the number of repeaters to take into account, whether you are transmitting over copper or fiber....
