Encoderless spindle control in servo mode

Jeff Casagrande Posts: 1529 Rating: (202)	You can't. SERVO mode (rotor position control) needs an encoder. You can run a SERVO Motor (synchronous motor) in Sensorless Vector Control (SLVC).

However, the beginning of the chapter states The servo control can only be operated with an encoder as no model calculation of the actual values is used in the servo control due to the computing speed required. 4.11 basically says "Profession driver filmed on a closed circuit course. Don't try this at home".

Jeff Casagrande Posts: 1529 Rating: (202)	You can, just not in SERVO mode. SLVC may work for a spindle if you can tolerate large speed dips on impact loads. But, if I had a synchronous motor, I would ALWAYS run it with an encoder. It would be pointless to run one without an encoder.
