Error "function refused by PLC"

janneia Posts: 18 Rating: (0)	Hello, I have just started to learn how to work with Siemens technology (and automation in general). The PLC I'm using is a S7-1500 and I also have TIA Portal, but everything hardware has been pre-configured for me (I know how to interpret the information on the screen, but no idea how to change configuration, etc.) I have just tried to run the clientdemo on a Linux box (RHEL 6.5) and I can connect to the PLC and see its status, etc. But whenever I try to read or write to a block (etc), the status message keeps on giving me an error - "Function refused by PLC" (read)or"Function not available" (write). Do you have any idea why it is doing this? I don't understand what I'm doing wrong (is there something really obvious that I am overlooking?) in terms of settings? Following the manual, I have changed to the Protection settings of the PLC to the onessuggested. Myproject doesn't have any DB (that I can see), but I was only really interested in the Merkers (memory bits?). Would that affect it at all? Thank you for all your help.

I looked inside Snap7 and there is no detailed specification of this error. It is completely unspecified. Just general error. I suggest you to write toDave Nardella. He is a creator and shuld be able to explain more detailed. @ Moderator, topic not related to TIA portal and therefore it is better to move in in Industrial Sotware General.

janneia Posts: 18 Rating: (0)	My PLC is currently set to "Full access (no protection)", but I did try to gettheCPU protection level info - Client->GetProtection() - before I tried to set the session password, and I got the error "Item requested was not found on PLC". Thank you for the tip though!

janneia Posts: 18 Rating: (0)	I don't have any DB, but I did have a few memory bits (Merkers?) that I was wanting to access.I was hoping to use Cli_MBRead/Cli_MBWrite to access them. Or am I misunderstanding something possibly fundamental?
