 I can do that in Starter or Scout, but I am working in TIA16 with Startdrive, and I don't see a possibility to insert an encoder on the CU320-2 directly.

I would use Starter + TIA to work with encoder DO.

Applicative olution is complex.

Use Telegramm 106 and external encoder as second encoder.

Use TO external encoder with interface datablock..

Use Preservo and Postservo to provide datablock with the necessary values out of Telegramm 106.

In our S7 1500T program, we will be gearing on that encoder.
If we would use a TM POSINPUT 2 tecnology card on the S7 1500 instead of SMC 30 (configured in startdrive), would we have a mastervalue that has finer resolution and updates faster compared to the SMC 30 (where we still have to work with preservo and postservo to write encoder values to datablock). Or would it make not any difference towards our gearing?

there will be no difference with TTL or SSI encoder, because position value will be updated in MC_Servo and position value from SMC30 will be copied from Tel. 106 to DB in "MC_Preservo".
