External Encoder Simulation

How can i simulate the external encoder to test the operation of the following Axis. I would like toprovide atest function that can be used when the external encoder is stationary. Thanks

dchartier Grandmaster Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 4/19/2025 Posts: 12346 Rating: (2710)	Hello Allun; If you are using an incremental encoder then you could try simulating it with a ramp function, such as this one provided in a Siemens FAQ: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/1853767 We have used it successfully is an earlier project. We started by using a scope on the encoder signal lines to make sure of the input values to the PLC so we could simulate them later. If you have an absolute or gray-scale encoder, then you would probably have to build or modify the ramp values so they match the increasing values as your program expects the real one to dio. Whereis the ramp function to beimplemented, in the Simotion or in a external PLC? There is no external PLC available. If the ramp is in the simotion how is set to give a reference to the Sychronous Axis ? Are there alternative ways to provide a reference to allow the axis to sychronize on velocity and position whilst testing. Thanks Allun

Manfred Experienced Member Joined: 6/22/2006 Last visit: 3/7/2022 Posts: 156 Rating: (17)	Hi Allun, The easiest way to simulate the leading value is to use a virtual axis.The following axis has two possible leading values.You can switch the leading value from the external encoder to the virtual axis.If you move the virtual axis you can test the operation of the following axis. Another way is to define a position or velocity value directly in a system variable(sensorSettings.actualValue) from the user program, This behavior is defined in TypeOfAxis.numberOfEncoders.Encoder_x.encoderIdentification:=SET_ACTUAL_VALUE.
